Part 1 – Knowing your dog and yourself

As with any great relationship, a little soul searching can go a long way in moderating your expectations and helping you craft your communication style.

Know your dog – Nature vs Nurture

Nature: What do you know about your pooch’s breed? Are they a worker? Super energetic or pretty chill? Understanding your dog’s genetic instincts can help you love their quirks and provide a fulfilling lifestyle.

Nurture: Did your new puppy start its life indoors or outdoors? Socialize much? If you’re adopting an adult dog, it has likely formed habits and behaviors based on its former lifestyle. All this life experience can have a huge influence on training.

TIP: Information about your dog will help you strategize, but it isn’t everything. Observation, love, and patience are the true keys to training success.

Know yourself

Let’s get real; how much time and space do you really have to dedicate to training? Make sure you set realistic expectations for your dog training regimen. A few 5-minute training sessions each day will get you really far.

TIP: Use training to build community. Exchange knowledge with other dog parents and qualified trainers.

Finally, let’s talk technique. There are a million dog training methods out their and—despite what some might say—they’re pretty similar! All training methods rely on…

Operant Conditioning – using rewards and/or aversive consequences to encourage or discourage certain behaviors.

Here are some of the most popular dog training methods in 2023:

Positive Reinforcement – Immediately identify and reward desired behaviors with treats, toys, praise, and playtime.
Balanced Training – a balanced system of rewards and (gentle!) aversive consequences.
Scientific Training – Enhance your training regime by incorporating the latest studies about dog behavior, breed, environmental conditions, etc.
Relationship Training – a slow, rich process of observing all of the factors that motivate your dog’s behavior and addressing them from their root causes.

TIP: It’s ok to mix and match!

Part 2 – Obedience Training

Basic obedience training establishes consistent communication between you and your dog, as well as the essential commands for safety and cohabitation.

TIP: Keep training sessions short (5 minutes, a few times a day), consistent, gradual, and—most importantly—fun!

Reliable Recall

Teaching your dog to “come” when called is a crucial safety skill. Avoid rampant squirrel chasing and running in traffic by training your dog to “come” early and often.

Start at home. Create a small distance between you and your pooch. Then entice them to come to you with a treat. Once your dog comes to you reliably, incorporate the verbal command, “come.”

Gradually add greater distance, then unfamiliar or distracting environments, into your training sessions. Make sure pup masters each new addition before leveling up!

TIP: It’s tempting to use your dog’s name for recall, but that can get confusing. Using the command “come” gives you a better shot at true reliability.

Leash Manners

What’s more relatable than a dog who’s tuggy on the leash? Make your walks way more pleasant with a few simple hacks.

First of all, choose a collar or harness that fits your dog properly. It should be snug, but not tight. Make pooch sit calmly while you put on their collar and leash.

If your dog is pulling, give the leash a light tug, say no, and stop (or just stop). When the leash slackens, you can start walking again. Repeat as needed and reward proper walking with treats and praise.

House Training

Dogs are tidy, hygienic creatures, much like yourself. They want to keep their living space clean, so give new dogs plenty of opportunities to do the right thing.

The best way to train a new dog—puppy or adult—to potty outside is to take them out often and regularly and to learn the signs that they have to go. When you want your dog to potty, take them to the appropriate spot, on leash, and wait quietly until they do. Reward them with a treat or play.

TIP: A puppy can reasonably be expected to hold it for the same number of hours as their age in months (until about 9 months).

Accidents are inevitable! Clean them up thoroughly to avoid repeat offending. Crates and pee-pee pads can be great support tools, especially if your dog needs to stay inside for long periods of time.

Sit, Stay, and Leave It

“Sit,” “Stay, and “Leave It” are simple commands that will make your life easier and form the basis of a more advanced training regime.

Sit: Start by holding a treat in your hand, close to your dog’s nose. Then raise your hand up. Their eyes will follow your hand, making them naturally sit down. Praise them and give them the treat. Repeat until they begin to stay seated a bit longer. Then you can introduce the verbal cue.

Stay: Ask your dog to sit or lie down. Then give them a hand signal, like a stop sign. Wait a few seconds, say “stay,” and then give them the treat. Keep practicing, gradually asking them to “stay” for longer time intervals and at a greater distance from you.

Leave it: First, offer your dog a treat. Then, hold a second treat in your closed fist. Your dog will try to nudge it out of your hand—don’t let them! Be patient. Eventually, your dog should start to back off. The instant they do, open your hand and praise them generously. Keep practicing. When they regularly, consistently back away from the treat, you can add the verbal command “leave it,” then start to introduce other objects. Practice with a toy now and reap the benefits later, when Fido’s got hold of a smelly critter or your favorite slippers.

Part 3 – Socialization

Helping your furry friend feel comfortable around other dogs and people will make your life together safer, easier, and more fun. The steps to socialize adult dogs and puppies are much the same, but adult dogs might require more patience.

Start at home with plenty of treats on hand. Invite trusted canines and adults one by one for short periods of exposure, always rewarding calm behavior. Gradually add kids, puppies, and less predictable environments. Always ask permission before allowing pup to approach strangers.

TIP: If your dog struggles, don’t give up, just slow down.

Part 4 – Behavior Training

Behavior Training is a way to address undesired responses to certain situations, like separation anxiety, aggression, and excessive barking. Successful behavior training is deeply attuned to the root causes of the behavior and uses counterconditioning. According to the ASPCA,

“Counterconditioning is a treatment process that changes an animal’s fearful, anxious or aggressive reaction to a pleasant, relaxed one instead. It’s done by associating the sight or presence of a feared or disliked person, animal, place, object or situation with something really good, something the dog loves.”

TIP: Know when you need help. Mild and severe cases of undesired behavior can both be treated at home. However, especially with more severe cases, the help of a qualified expert can greatly improve your chances of success.

Part 5 – Advanced Mental Stimulation

Mental stimulation can be just as important as physical exercise for your dog’s wellbeing. Studies show that:

“Integrating appropriate challenge into the lives of captive animals can have a positive effect on behavioral and physiological indicators of stress, resulting in improved standards of welfare.”

With so many dog food options on the market, choosing the right one can be stressful. The good news is that, in most cases, any reputable brand suitable for your dog’s age and size should be fine as long as pooch responds well to it.

Conventional Dog Food

Conventional dog food is made up of a mixture of animal and plant-based ingredients. It comes in dry kibble or wet canned forms. In the United States, all dog food on the market is required to meet or exceed the standards of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), so it’s all safe for pup!

Then how do you pick?

First, choose an option indicated for your dog’s age and size.

Next, check out the ingredient list. The best dog foods have meat in the first two to three ingredients and few chemical preservatives and fillers.

Homemade Dog Food

Cooking your dog’s meals with love can sound so appealing! It gives you complete control over the ingredients that they’re consuming.

Ask yourself a few simple questions to determine if homemade dog food is right for you:

Do you have time to shop, cook, and portion meals just for pooch? Your dog’s nutritional needs are different from yours and they can’t simply have a plate of the family dinner.
Is the cost budget appropriate? A homemade diet is often cheaper than specialized dog foods, but more expensive than conventional kibble.
How will you find recipes? Make sure to use reputable sources like Balance It when researching your pup’s nutritional needs, choosing recipes, and buying supplements.
Does your dog have medical conditions? If so, you’ll need to adjust your recipes accordingly.

Pros:

Much like the Paleo diet for humans, the BARF diet is modelled after how dogs ate “in the wild.” It includes high-quality animal proteins and dog-safe fruits and veggies with no preservatives or fillers.
Promotes healthy fur, skin, bones, joints, teeth, energy levels, and digestion.
Contains no known canine allergens.

Cons:

Raw animal products carry an increased risk of pathogens, like Salmonella. The American Veterinary Association does not recommend feeding pets raw animal products that have not been treated to eliminate pathogens.
It can get pricey.
Raw diets are grain free. That’s great if your dog has a grain allergy, but if they don’t, the lack of carbs might affect their energy levels.

Does that clear things up? We hope so!

Can my dog be vegetarian?

Technically, yes! Dogs are omnivores, which means that their bodies are able to process plant-based nutrients, including protein.

BUT to ensure pooch’s health on a plant-based diet, you’ll almost definitely need to add supplements, especially those containing taurine and L-carnatine, two amino acids that your dog’s body won’t synthesize well without consuming meat.

If your dog’s food seems to make them sick, it’s time to talk to a vet. They may have an intolerance to an ingredient or need a special diet.

How do I know if my dog is getting enough exercise?

Getting the right amount of exercise is absolutely crucial to your furry friend’s well-being. Typical physical activities include walking, jogging, swimming, and playing!

A proper exercise regime ensures:

Healthy weight maintenance
Mood support
A reduction in agitated behaviors—a dog with extra energy is likely to act out!

How much exercise does my dog need?

Your dog’s breed, age, and health are the biggest factors in determining the amount of exercise they need.

Play games, like fetch, that keep your dog running without needing your full attention.

The good news is that your pooch doesn’t need the full workup at the doggy spa to stay healthy. But basic hygiene is important. Here are a few simple dog grooming steps you can take at home to keep your dog healthy.

Regular bathing – Most breeds need a bath every 4-6 weeks. Bathing too much or too little can irritate pup’s skin.
Nail trimming – Cutting your pup’s nails prevents them from breaking and promotes joint health.
Teeth cleaning – Regular brushing and/or dental chews helps prevent dental disease. Ask your vet about techniques and canine-safe dental products.

However, canines with special upkeep needs like major haircuts might need professional help.

The Vet

Your relationship with your vet should begin as soon as your new dog enters your home, or even before. Research the vets in your area and make sure you find one you really click with!

Never skip pooch’s annual checkup and call the vet anytime you have questions or notice physical or behavioral changes.

Vaccines

Ideally, every dog begins vaccinations at 6-8 weeks, completes the first cycle around 16 weeks, and receives boosters throughout their lifetime.

Sterilization can also reduce unpleasant behaviors related to sexual maturity. In males, this can look like aggression, marking of territory, or wandering to find females in heat. Females may also become agitated or wander when in heat.

Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos and causes worms to reproduce and grow in your pup’s bloodstream. It is easy to prevent with oral medication, but difficult and costly to treat once contracted!

Fleas and ticks are a nuisance and can also transmit disease. There are many ways to prevent flea and tick attacks including drops, collars, and pills.

Sometimes we feel like we’re totally on the same wavelength as our pups. Other times we find them simply baffling. Great pet parents love insights into their dog’s psychology because they help us take better care of the canines we adore. Luckily, TrackiPet has some key wisdom to share.

Today we’re going to discuss four key dog psychology questions:

What is my dog’s emotional capacity?
What does my dog’s body language mean?
What do I do about my dog’s aggression or anxiety?
How can I improve my bond with my dog?

What is my dog’s emotional capacity?

Scientists are all over this question! Many top universities now have research teams dedicated to studying not just what pooch feels, but also how pooch relates emotionally. Complex stuff!

Here are some basic findings:

Dogs’ Emotional Range

Current wisdom suggests that dogs have a similar emotional range to that of two or three-year-old human children. It includes:

- Excitement/Arousal
- Distress
- Contentment
- Disgust
- Fear
- Anger
- Joy
- Suspicion/Shyness

Affection/Love

That’s right! Your dog can love you back. We knew it all along…

This is because dogs have a similar brain structure to our own and release the same hormones as they change emotional states—including oxytocin, the “love hormone.”

Empathy Between Dogs and Humans

Studies confirm that dogs and humans can in fact empathize with each other.

Scientists have been able to measure dogs’ physical and behavioral responses to the subtle changes in human facial expressions and body odor that accompany our changing emotions.

Dogs are capable of reading us so well because they’ve evolved to observe their humans very intensely. So, the more quality time we spend with our pups, the more highly developed their capacity for affective empathy.

Inter-dog Empathy

Inter-dog empathy is most visible during play.

Professor Marc Bekoff from the University of Colorado, Boulder writes about how, during play, we see that dogs are capable of role play, asking for forgiveness, and resignifying behaviors that would otherwise show aggression or a desire to mate.

This means that canine playmates can broadcast and interpret intentions and feelings.

What does my dog’s body language mean?

Since dogs can’t speak, body language is their most important communication tool. Understanding pup’s body language can help you recognize their likes and dislikes so you can better provide for them.

Observing your own pup carefully is the best way to get to know their individual quirks. But there are some common postures that you can learn to get a sense of what any dog’s body language is telling you.

Eyes

Soft Eyes – Relaxed or squinty eyes signal calm and happiness.

Hard Eyes – A cold, unflinching stare shows that your dog detects a threat.

Whale Eyes – This is a funny term for when your dog averts their gaze, showing the whites of their eyes. It is a more submissive response to discomfort, stress, or anxiety.

Facial Expressions

Yawning and lip-licking in dogs signal discomfort or stress.

When you see a dog “smiling,” jaw relaxed, lolling tongue, they generally are as happy as they look!

But if you see more of a snarl, with the corners of the lips tightly curled and both the front and the side teeth showing, your dog is warning a perceived threat to back off.

Body Posture

Raised hackles, when a dog’s fur stands on end, indicate excitement or arousal. When combined with other signs of aggression, it is a warning. But absent those, it could indicate just plain interest.

Likewise, when your dog’s weight is shifted forward. They are clearly intrigued by something. This could be positive or negative

Submissive postures include hunching or rolling onto the back and exposing the belly. Both are an attempt to look small and/or unthreatening in the face of danger—or they may just be asking for a belly rub!

In most species, a raised paw indicates uncertainty. And when your dog bows, it means it’s playtime!

Tail Position

Wagging signals positive or negative arousal. The faster the wag, the more intense the excitement.

Sticking straight up can signal assertiveness or confidence, depending on the situation. A neutral position is relaxed, and dogs with their tails lowered or in a between-the-legs position are scared or stressed.

Remember, to accurately interpret your dog’s body language, you’ll have to read all the bodily elements as a whole and take context into consideration.

What do I do about my dog’s aggression or anxiety?

Aggression and anxiety in dogs are two of the most common concerns for pet parents. Before you start trying to completely “cure” them, remember that, in appropriate measures, both can be natural and necessary reactions to the world.

The best ways to prevent aggression and anxiety from becoming excessive are to:

Find and address the causes of the behavior.
Practice mindful training.
Foster an easeful home environment.

Aggression and anxiety can both can be provoked by physical illness, so they could be a sign that it’s time for a checkup with the vet.

Let’s explore dog aggression and anxiety.

Aggression

Like in humans, dog aggression is a response to a perceived threat. Things that feel threatening include fear, pain, competition, and frustration.

When they perceive a threat, dogs will usually exhibit warning behaviors like growling and baring their teeth. If the threat isn’t removed, behavior can escalate to biting. Dogs who bite without warning usually learned at some point in their lives that the warning behaviors don’t work.

If you notice aggressive behavior in your dog:

Try to find the cause. If the perceived threat can be removed in the short term, remove it.
Stand still and behave nonconfrontationally. Look away, back away slowly, etc.
Observe patterns. If the behavior is limited, you can probably control it by avoiding or training other responses to the perceived threat.
If the behavior becomes severe, unpredictable, or generalized, you probably need professional help.
Don’t punish your dog with yelling or physical aggression, as this can provoke worse responses in the short or long term.

Anxiety

Dogs love company and often suffer when left alone. Though some dogs can cope with separation, others need help. When a dog acts out when left alone, this is called Separation-Related Behavior (SRB). Behaviors may include destructive chewing, barking, self-harm, trying to run away, and having accidents.

If your dog exhibits signs of SRB:

Practice separation. Go over the rituals of leaving and coming back, staying away for only a few seconds or minutes at a time and gradually building up.
Make sure your dog has had exercise, potty time, and food before being left alone. If they are physically satisfied, they will be less agitated.
Leave entertainment and maybe snacks to keep them busy and happy while you’re away.
Create a calm environment, drawing the curtains and even leaving music on.
Ask for help. Hiring a walker to check in on pup can help soothe them. If the behaviors continue, consider finding a trustworthy trainer.

How can I improve my bond with my dog?

Bonding with pooch can be the sweetest, most rewarding part of having a dog! It’s what makes you a team and gives you both a sense of fulfillment and security. Here are some simple ways to improve your bond with your furry friend.

Routine and Consistent Communication

When pup knows what to expect and how to read you and your environment, they feel more secure and confident. This makes a great foundation for relationship building.

Touch, Eye Contact, and Grooming

Just like with humans, touch and eye contact in the wrong context can feel uncomfortable or threatening to dogs. But with you, in most cases, they are deeply bonding and provoke the release of oxytocin! Giving your dog your full attention makes them feel adored.

Activities and Training

Doing activities together lets you get to know each other’s likes and dislikes, learn to read each other, and just have fun! Activities include teaching new tricks, getting outside, or setting up an obstacle course in the living room.

Many rescue dogs come with incomplete histories. That’s ok! Patience, love, and observation will get you far.

Preparing the home

Rescue dogs have often lacked stability in their lives or had their stability taken away from them. Preparing your home not only lays the groundwork for clear communication and expectations but also mitigates the negative effects of certain behaviors that arise in times of change.

Set up pooch’s physical living space. It might be limited in the beginning and grow with time and trust. Dogproof this space by:

Removing chemicals
Removing fragile or dear items
Arranging for easy clean-up of potty accidents
Securing cables
Setting boundaries with toddler gates

Finally, arrange pooch’s bed (and/or crate) and toys!

You’ll also want to pre-plan a routine for feeding, exercise, potty, and training time. Make sure you’ll be able to stick with it for the long term. Clear your schedule as much as possible for the first few weeks after pup moves in to maximize bonding and training time.

Success Story: Rebuilding Health

Butterball was found on the street as a puppy, emaciated and full of fleas. Fortunately, a good Samaritan found her and brought her to an excellent shelter with a strong rehabilitation program. She was nursed back to health and given all the best until she found her loving forever home!

Settling in

Congratulations! You’ve now welcomed your brand new rescue. How can you help them settle in?

The vet

Depending on your rescue dog’s age and history, they might need basic medical care like vaccines, microchipping, sterilization, or a general checkup. It’s crucial that these are completed before you introduce socialization and outdoor exercise into your routine. Even if pooch is up-to-date, it’s useful to build a strong relationship with your vet early on.

Creating a safe, calm environment

Avoid overstimulation during pup’s early days in your home. Introduce them to their space, toys, and routine with calm and consistency. If you have kids, make sure an adult is around during their early interactions with pup. And maybe wait a while before bringing playdates home.

Even if your new rescue is already well trained, big changes can cause unexpected behaviors. Accidents, chewing, and guarding are not unusual and should be treated with patience. Be on the lookout for symptoms of medical distress or behavioral issues that will require-long term training.

Diet

Whenever possible, maintain consistency with the diet that pooch is used to. If you’re going to make a change, do so gradually, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old one.

Watch carefully how pooch responds to their diet.

Know your dog’s triggers. Do they love to chase critters? Are they scared of fireworks? Use extra safety protocols when triggers are present.

It’s easy to panic when you realize pooch is missing—we know. But the good news is that the vast majority of lost dogs are reunited with their families! So stay calm and maximize the efficiency of your lost dog search.

Right Away

Jump into action immediately when you realize pooch is missing!

Start close to the site of departure, moving steadily outward. Call their name and use food and familiar-smelling objects to attract them.
Target your search. What are pooch’s favorite places? Are they high-energy and likely to run? Are they fearful and likely to hide? Your bond is your greatest asset.
Call for help. Ask friends and family to come search with you. Ask people on the street if they’ve seen pooch. Use photos and share your contact info.

Within a Few Hours

If your initial search doesn’t yield results, here are the next steps:

Notify the authorities. Call local shelters, humane societies, groomers, animal control etc. to let them know your dog is lost. Share pup’s microchip number.
Send out an alert via (a) lost and found network(s).
Distribute both paper and digital missing dog posters. Paper posters can be put up on telephone poles and notice boards in shops, cafés, libraries, and anywhere that has one. Digital notices can be posted on social media in neighborhood and pet-focused groups. Be sure to update often, as social media posts can get buried.
An effective missing dog poster includes:
- A photo
- A description with identifying features
- Pup’s name
- Pup’s microchip number
- Your contact details
- Reward details
Search at night. A scared pup may hide during the day and come out at night when things feel calmer. Repeat your search with flashlights.
Beware of scams. If someone asks for the reward before returning pooch, be skeptical.

Within a Week

We hope pup’s already been found by now—and they usually are. But if your search takes longer, don’t despair! Dogs missing for longer than a week are still often reunited with their families. Be persistent and proactive.

Two revolutionary technologies have completely transformed the experience of losing a dog: microchips and dog trackers. Let’s take a closer look at these two pet-parent lifesavers.

Microchips

A microchip is a permanent, tamper-proof identification device for pets. It is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted with an injection by the vet. Side effects are very rare and chips require no maintenance.

Once placed, you must register your device with the manufacturer. You can register your contact information and sometimes your dog’s medical history.

The microchip is read by a scanner. The scanner will show the manufacturer and the microchip number. The number can then be searched in the manufacturer’s registry, which will share your contact info.

There are two types of microchips: those with ISO standard frequency and those without. Scanners can typically read one or both (universal). Choosing an ISO standard microchip improves your chances that it can be read abroad.

A microchip does not replace a regular ID tag, because a regular ID tag can be read by anyone, no scanner needed. But it can’t fall off or be removed like an ID tag can.

Microchips make dog theft nearly impossible and reduce reunion time when a lost dog is found.

Trackers

A dog tracker, at a minimum, allows you to view your dog’s location, which obviously makes your lost dog search A LOT more efficient.

What to Do if You Find a Lost Dog

Offer pup clean water. You don’t know how long they’ve gone without drinking.
Look for an ID tag. If the owner’s contact info is available, call without delay.
Check social media and lost and found databases. If you find a notification with the owner’s information, pick up the phone! You can also post a found dog notice.
Take pup to a local authority—shelter, vet, or animal control. They can scan for a microchip. If the owner can’t be located immediately, make a plan for care. The authority may be able to hang onto the dog until the owner is found or they might ask you to!

To prevent upset tummies, avoid feeding pooch for a few hours before beginning travel.
Get in plenty of exercise and potty time before setting out.
Prepare all the items you’ll need for the duration of travel. These may include security devices, medication, water recipients, and potty pads.

Car
